Masters 1000

Shanghai 2026

Shanghai, China 5 October - 19 October 2026 Hard (Indoor) 96 players
Prize Money $8,800,000

Analysis

Shanghai is one of the fastest-paced Masters 1000 events on the calendar and certainly the most physically demanding. The combination of humid heat and air density makes the environment oppressive — players dehydrate quickly, breathing becomes difficult, and players in poor physical condition regularly collapse starting in the quarterfinals. The withdrawal rate in the final round is notably high here.

The change to Yonex balls a few years ago has increased the perceived speed of the tournament. The ball flies faster than in the past, the trajectories become sharp, and offensive play is immediately rewarded. Counterintuitively, despite this appearance of speed, extreme humidity can slow the ball down in the most critical moments, creating two very different behaviors.

The surprise victory of Valentin Vacherot in 2025 - a player who was not even seeded - has reminded us that Shanghai can hold some upsets. When the favorites start to physically exhaust themselves in the third round, opportunities arise for more modestly ranked players but with better energy management.

Favored Profiles

Powerful servers with excellent physical condition Aggressive players capable of playing quickly even in the heat Manage the emotional fatigue of the Masters 1000 at the end of the season well

The pure counterpunchers and defenders will really struggle in these fast conditions.
