- There are opponents against whom you never find the right distance, no matter the form of the moment. I have the feeling that Jakub Mensik is exactly that for Brandon Nakashima, and the record goes in this direction.
- Let's be clear: the American had a real start. Etcheverry dispatched 6-3, 6-4, in front of his home crowd, on a surface where he is 11-7 this season. Nothing to blame him for.
- The real argument against my pick is on the Czech side: Mensik was just resuming after a month without a single match, and his first round on Tuesday dragged on for three sets against a qualifier ranked beyond 400th, losing the tiebreaker along the way.
- But this rust, everyone has seen it and the market has already taken it into account. Tuesday's draw was also the worst possible for a comeback: a wall that resets everything and lengthens every point. He still found the way out, and he now has rhythm in his legs.
- Nakashima won't pose that problem for him. His tennis is clean, built, but it's readable, and he doesn't make an explosive player run the same way.
- The past record remains, and it speaks: two confrontations, both on hard courts, two wins for Mensik. 6-4, 7-6 at the Australian Open, 7-5, 7-5 in Canberra the same season. Four sets played, four tight sets… four sets for the same man.
- And the Mensik of 2024 was not yet the one of today: 17th in the world at 20 years old, 16 wins for 6 losses on hard this season, the best momentum of the two, and by far.
- I expect a serving match, with few break opportunities and knife-edge set endings. This is precisely the territory where the Czech has built his two wins against him.
- At the odds I'm taking it, the line still seems overpaid above its real probability. But it's moving fast and in one direction: if it continues to drop, the bet loses its interest, let's say it clearly.
