Hangzhou is played the same week as Chengdu but the two tournaments are parallel universes. Hangzhou is at sea level (20 meters) with crushing humidity - the air is really thick. Unlike Chengdu which soars high in the air, Hangzhou offers a heavier ball that does not progress easily. The result is a tournament that is clearly more dependent on physical endurance and the management of constant perspiration.
It's an environment that tests endurance before talent. Players who arrive fresh in Hangzhou can impose their game. Those who drag fatigue from the end of the season or who do not tolerate the stifling humidity collapse quickly, often as early as the first rounds. The mental torpor that accompanies extreme humidity is often as problematic as physical fatigue.
