Analysis

Chengdu is among the fastest outdoor hard court tournaments of the season, mainly due to the altitude (500 meters) which thins the air and visibly accelerates the ball. The court plays extremely fast, the bounce is high, and aggressive players who finish points in 3-4 shots find ideal conditions. The daytime heat further accentuates this speed.

As everywhere in Asia, the gap between day and evening sessions is striking. In the afternoon, when temperatures exceed 35 degrees, the courts play at an almost extreme speed. In the evening, when humidity rises slightly, the game slows down imperceptibly, but remains well above normal. Players must therefore adapt to these two very different conditions.

This is a tournament designed for powerful servers and players capable of finishing quickly. In 2024, Juncheng Shang showed that Chinese tennis could shine in front of its home crowd under these fast conditions, but the winning profile remains that of the pure attacker.
