- Everyone is arriving in Washington after the grass season, no one has played a single match on hard courts since March, and the real question in this opening round is not who is rusty. It's who goes home.
- Taylor Fritz goes home. Hard is his surface, the heat and humidity of the East Coast won't teach him anything, and he leads the tour in aces this season. On a fast court with high bounces, his serve is unreadable, it's just something you have to endure.
- Zizou Bergs, on the other hand, finds the surface on which he wins the least. His 2026 hard court record is negative, 6W for 7L, and he's coming back to it right after the best month of his career on grass.
- The detail that matters when you're playing a margin and not a winner: when the Belgian faces a top striker on this surface, the bill quickly adds up. 6-1 6-2 against Tommy Paul at Indian Wells, 6-2 6-1 against Jiri Lehecka at Doha, two matches where he never had the upper hand.
- I'm not going to pretend otherwise: he's coming off the best month of his career, with a first ATP title at Eastbourne and his best ranking, and he even took a set off Fritz in Halle six weeks ago. Except it was on grass, in Germany, and the American still won the match.
- The other half of the ticket takes me to the next court, with exactly the same reasoning. Learner Tien is also playing at home, and his whole season has been written on hard courts: a quarter-final at the Australian Open, a semi-final at Delray Beach, then Ben Shelton and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina taken out back-to-back at Indian Wells.
- Adrian Mannarino, on the other hand, is going through his most complicated season in a long time, under the 40% win mark, and his last hard court success dates back to Miami in March.
- The matchup doesn't help him. His left hand and low trajectories first bother right-handers, but Tien is also left-handed, serves in the same alleys and takes the ball very early. High bounces and heavy air on top of that, and you get pretty much the opposite of his ideal playing field.
- He still reached a final in Montpellier in February and I'm not going to bury a player who's been making better players than him play badly for fifteen years. But fixing everything at once, at 38, right in the first match of an American tour, that's a lot.
- Two Americans going home while the other two are still finding their footing: I see Fritz settling in very quickly and wrapping it up in two sets, and Tien going through without needing a third set.
