- There are quarter-finals that read in the rankings, and others that read in the players' profiles. The one between Nuno Borges and Luciano Darderi belongs to the second category, and it's my whole reading of the day: I back the Portuguese S1 and on his ML.
- Darderi, he's a clay court metronome. Heavy topspin, rhythm, points built on leg strength. When you give him pace, he crushes you: we've seen it last year when he chained Bastad and Umag one after the other.
- Borges, it's exactly the opposite: a player who refuses to give that rhythm. Slices, variations in height and speed, early ball taking, net approaches. And against this type of opponent, the Italian gets impatient easily: he rushes, he overplays, and the errors pile up.
- Darderi has never beaten Borges. In Auckland last year, he had taken the first set before being turned around 5-7, 6-3, 7-5. And just three weeks ago in Majorca, the Portuguese did it again: 7-6, 6-4, first set in a tiebreak included.
- I raise the objection myself, because it's serious: those duels have been played on hard and grass, and clay is Darderi's kingdom. Two titles last summer, a semi-final in Rome this spring, a defending champion status here: the market makes him the favorite for good reasons.
- Except that Bastad is no hostile territory for Borges: the 2024 title, it's him, with Nadal beaten in the final for the last image. These courts speak to him as much as to the Italian.
- And his week is eloquent: Kouamé settled 6-4, 6-2, then a lesson to Dimitrov 6-4, 6-2, with this sentence on the way out, «the feeling that everything was going to go in«. Zero sets lost, zero scares.
- On the other side, the defending champion does the job without flair: Altmaier dismissed 6-4, 6-6, a clean week. Nothing alarming, nothing dazzling either since Rome.
- The observation is simple: a coin toss match between the paper favorite and the match-up boss. When the coin is balanced and they pay me above it on the player whose game plan has never been solved by the other, I sign.
- The S1, it's the same thesis in short format: Borges' style bothers from the first exchanges, before any coaching adjustment, and the Italian needs time to find the answer when he finds it.
- I see a tight match, annoyed errors on Darderi's side at the crucial moments, and a fourth tactical lesson from the Portuguese, started from the first set.
